child care vaccancies

I receive the care for kids newsletter frequently and every time it's about the lack of child care places available to parents. Here in South Australia it's quite the opposite. If you look on the search for child care Western suburbs of Adelaide South Australia you will see what I mean. Child care centres and family day care homes need to be placed where needed most and no new ones placed in the areas of saturation where vaccancies are rife. It is hard to keep fees down when you only have 2…See More

Health in the child care sector

Well here I am again spouting about the benefits of Family day care environments in comparrison to child care centres. Everyone seems to focus on child care costs and nowadays the eylf. Well I've said my piece on those subjects so lets turn to health. Child care centres have a great number of child attendances, even if the child is in a smaller group within the centre due to age, the germs are still circulating through the entire centre. Recently within the past 5 months I have taken into care…See More

Caring for kids

Hi I'm Helen child CARER not EDUCATOR. This is the latest phase the powers that be are going through changing our title from carer to educator, well I don't like it and as a self employed person I will call myself what I like thankyou very much. I consider myself a CARER I don't like the word educator it portrays the false impression of an institutional teacher. Educator omits the important part CARING for children. Yes in a sense we are educators, so are all you parents out there. Any one…See More

visitor attendance records

Well my fellow fdc educators, what do you think of our visitors having to sign in and out of our homes ? According to the new regs thats what they are expecting. I think this is a little over the top and invasive of our rights. My grandchildren occassionally visit for an hour or two and because I would be over my numbers for them to be left in my care, my daughter in law stays for a cuppa. Why should she have to sign in and out? and put the reason for her visit? Not to mention how hard it is to…See More

Family Day Care Support centre

Well it's that time again when our support centre sends out it's compliance guide, and boy am I sick and tired of being threatened by them about fraud. They would have us all believe that the contract we have with the parenr should reflect the parents care needs. For example in their view and using their example " James books care for 10am to 3pm. He then begins to pick up his child at 1:30pm. You must change the contract to show a 1:30pm finish" What a lot of codswhollop! The agreement you have…See More

bullying

Kindies could be doing more to prevent children from developing into bullies. As a child carer one of my passions is to provide an environment in which all children of all ages are comfortable and safe both physically and emotionally. I have cared for hundreds of children over the past 20 or more years with diverse personalities and dispositions. I have gently steered them along the path of reasoning and consideration focussing on fair play for all. I have had those who start down the bullying…See More

public holiday childcare fees

It seems the majority of parents would prefer child care operators to increase fees to cover public holidays in contrast to paying the public holiday fee. I would like to point out that this is not in their best interest. Firstly the public holiday fee still attracts the CCB and 50% rebate. Secondly the CCB only covers up to $3.78 per hour and cuts out after 37 1/2 hours per week. So by increasing fees parents would get back less subsidy which would mean their out of pocket expense would be…See More

kid talk

I have found when dealing with young children, it is important to understand the meaning of their discussion behind the words they use. For example one day I was pegging washing on the line while the children rode the bikes around me. Mis T 4 years said "I'm gonna run into you", while many may see this as a violent threat, I perceived it for how it was actually meant and told miss T the correct thing to say was please move I don't want to run into you. While many children can speak clearly by…See More

If you like add more information about yourself here
I have been a family day Carer in South Australia for more than 20 years. I started caring for other peoples children when the youngest of my 4 children turned 2 years old. I have 3 grandchildren aged 3 weeks to 3 years. I love spending time with littlies and helping them in their struggles to discover their abilities and explore their environment. I provide care on demand from as early as 6am till 6pm most week days, and provide overnight care regularly 2 nights per week or on demand as needed. I enjoy the exploration of the past in the form of genealogy, I played, coached and umpired the sport of netball up until a few years ago when I finally accepted the fact I was getting too old to be carreering around on a netball court, now I just watch it. I have dabbled with china painting but don't have a great deal of time with it these days. I am a star trek and star gate fan and like to relax and watch a video when I can't find anything of interest on TV I also like comedies and documentaries, and most favourite of all I love to talk, many of my clients sit on my couch and talk to each other while observing me interact with their children at drop off or pick up time and this is very beneficial to the children and adults alike. I really enjoy my work

Thanks for your advice Helen. I'm never embarrassed by the antics we resort to working with kids.. haha...  I do put music or wiggles on and sing along to it, have a toy handy & play with it, do peak a boo things like that. This little one has so much going on I think it will be a challenge & something that time will perhaps fix, but I will try your suggestions & I'll let you now how I get on.

I don't know why you would have had trouble with my contact email, maybe I put the wrong address like misspelled something, my apologies.

Have a great week :-)

thanks Helen I seem to be targeted by our CDOs quite a bit and other carers in my area have said the same thing to me I tend to say whats on my mind without being rude but they really dont like it when we voice our opions. This money issues is a real problem here and am tired of hearing carers loosing money and this has just happened again to me and the head of our scheme told me that i would have to right it off, but if the council told her that they couldnt afforf to pay her the correct wage each week would she just right it off?? Dont think so,Holroyd city council have a debt recovery service for all carers in FDC or lond cay care oosh ect the council recover any money owed for the carers, why cant we all have this service thats what we pay them the admin fee for .Also just found a debt recovery agency that works just for child care providers will post the info if anyone  interested fee per year for FDC is $22

Hi Helen this information has been wonderful to hear as I find our scheme also only take the side of the parents if there where no carers there would be no CDOs and a lot of parents without childcare, so we should get a lot more support than the little we get now.

What scheme are you with is it in NSW
